Ford Invests $450 Million To Build Batteries In Michigan

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Ford announced that it’s planning to invest another $450 million towards it’s next generation of plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

This is great news for Michigan, the investment would bring about 1,000 new jobs in 2012 when the battery production gets into full swing. Ford has been able to focus it’s efforts into becoming the world’s best car manufacturer by dedicating resources such as this to the future of electrified vehicles.

A growing lineup of electric vehicles has only begun, and to have the battery system technology being developed in Michigan represents the vast manufacturing and engineering capabilities for all future vehicles will originate in Detroit. The impact has been felt worldwide, as will the rebuilding and success that is soon to come.

Everywhere you look, online, newspapers, interviews, there are people praising everything about Ford, from the leadership, the products, and now the decision being made to bring about a new generation of electric vehicles. The confidence in buying American has not only come back, it has taken over.

In addition to building in-house talent and producing vehicles for a global market, Ford has begun to streamline this by making complicated processes and products much simpler. The result will be a combination of not only in-vehicle technology, but the realization of how all of our mobile devices, and means of communication will integrate and make lives easier.

In addition to the future of electric vehicles on the horizon, it’s going to be interesting to see how this new consolidation of technology will begin to enhance our lives, opening up lines of communication through new internet applications and the integration with vehicles.

The anticipation of vehicles like the pure battery electric version of the Ford Focus for 2011, and it’s 100 miles per full charge and zero emissions is exciting and inspirational to see the vision come to life.

Ford’s Transit Connect – Electric Van

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Ford has been making some significant strides when it comes to the future production of electric vehicles. Ford seems to be making all the right moves, so if retraining engineers to focus on electric vehicles is their new direction, then expect other manufacturers to also follow their lead.

The decision to retrain Ford engineers to work on the electric vehicle development has begun in Dearborn MI. The first series of courses that engineers will attend will help prepare them for the future, and introduce them to new tools that are being developed. They’ll be working alongside companies like Azure Dynamics and Johnson Controls who along with Ford will be producing the highly anticipated battery electric Transit Connect van.

Starting in January 2010, the engineers will begin the courses in preparation of new manufacturing, engineering and testing procedures for working with battery electric vehicles, including Ford’s Transit Connect. The Transit Connect battery electric commercial van in 2010 promises to be the ideal fleet vehicle, which has virtually no competition in the US as of yet.

The use of an electric commercial vehicle is a wise move by Ford in getting a vehicle on the market that has significant potential to replace older and less reliable work vans for various businesses. Businesses spend a considerable amount for fuel, maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles so it makes good sense to provide these vans to companies like electrical, plumbing and other types of uses.

Ford partnered with Azure Dynamics to supply their Force Drive battery electric drive train for the Transit Connect. Azure Dynamics will use Johnson Controls, the worlds largest battery manufacturer, to provide the lithium-ion batteries for the Transit. The range is estimated to be approximately 80 miles on a full charge.

On December 10th 2009, The Detroit News named Ford’s Transit Connect Truck of the Year for 2009.

The 2010 Ford Flex EcoBoosts Its Way into American Dealerships Ford’s new performance-oriented drivetrain scores high marks at the fuel pump, too.

When it comes to redefining the crossover market, it’s hard to find a better example of the future of this segment than the 2010 Ford Flex with EcoBoost. The largest crossover vehicle in the Ford lineup, the Flex is a triumph of style, engineering and practicality that aims to offer those buyers considering a minivan or SUV a sportier and more attractive alternative.

With a design that brings to mind a combination of the woody wagons and panel delivery vans that plied America’s roads in the 1950s and 60s, the Flex stands out from the crowd of visually bland crossovers and ties in with Ford’s strong styling heritage.
